Pathos in Newspaper article

The article uses pathos in a way that evokes a sense of pride in the people who fought for the passing of the civil rights bill. The newspaper heading uses the word "hatred" which refers to the hate among races in America during the 1960's. The article comments on how it was a hard fight fought to get leaders to accept the bill into law. It was said to be the "nation's strongest civil right's act" and this was despite having the bill being watered down to please many people opposing the bill. The nation was urged to be restraint because despite having leaders vote on the bill, many people were still against it and did not want to conform to what the law stated. President Johnson was quoted in the article"'...lay aside irrelevant differences and make our nation whole'", this quote adds to a sense of sincerity and hope. By those words President Johnson seemed like he was for the bill and signed the bill because he change for the better. The bill was suppose to be a victory for America, used to unite all races. The article made the passing of the bill seem like a long fought battle that was finally over.

  1. I definitely agree that the feeling of pride is being evoked here because it was a catalyst for social change. Many people worked hard for a long time in order to see the passage of this Bill, and felt accomplished in their work. This was a major turning part in our nation's history, and I would hope that the people who worked for this to happen would take pride in their work. After seeing the headlines I'm sure that's the exact emotion that they felt.

  2. This appeal to pathos in my opinion is the most effective and used by people that did so much good for the society. These appeals also grab the attention of the reader very early on and are able to keep that.

  3. Situations like these are actually tricky to be seen as genuine because as a President, there is a certain responsibility to pacify individuals. There is a balance between whether action should be taken because it is just and right, or because it will prevent more problems.

  4. I believe pathos is the main tool used in both pieces, and you did a good job describing the emotions the works aim to evoke. A sense of pride and hope can certainly be drawn from these images.

  5. I like how you mentioned the importance of the use of the word "hatred" in your argument. I feel that it is a very strong word and connects well with peoples' emotions.

  6. I agree that wording, even one word, has the power to convey the emotion much stronger than a whole statement or piece of writing. I like the reference to how the header flips the view by making the outcome look negative.
